NGC 4001 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E4 in the constellation Ursa Major at the northern sky . It is estimated to be 632 million light years from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4010 , it forms the optical galaxy pair Holm 314
The type II supernova SN 2003ky was observed here.
The object was discovered on April 13, 1852 by Bindon Blood Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
