NGC 4004 is an active Galaxy from the Hubble type P with extended star formation in Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 150 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. Together with IC 2982 , it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 312 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3988 , NGC 4008 , NGC 4016 , NGC 4017 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 11, 1785 .
