NGC 4007 = NGC 4005 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb with an active galaxy core in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 199 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with NGC 4000 and is considered a member of the NGC 3987 group ( LGG 261 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3997 , NGC 3999 , NGC 4011 , NGC 4015 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 6, 1785 and recorded in the NGC catalog as NGC 4007 . The astronomer Otto Struve also observed the galaxy in 1869, but without recognizing its identity, which is why it is listed again in the NGC catalog as NGC 4005 .
