NGC 4016 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBdm: in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 153 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. Together with the galaxy NGC 4017 it forms the galaxy pair Arp 305 and it is a member of the NGC 4017 group ( LGG 262 ).

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3988 , NGC 4004 , NGC 4008 , IC 2982 .

The type II supernova SN 2002hm was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 30, 1854 by RJ Mitchell , an assistant to William Parsons .
