NGC 1242 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 177 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 81,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 1241 , it forms an interacting pair of galaxies. Together with NGC 1247 , PGC 11824 and PGC 11937 it also forms the NGC 1241 group .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 1237 .
The object was discovered on December 15, 1786 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
