NGC 1249 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Horologium in the southern sky . It is an estimated 41 million light years from the Milky Way , about 65,000 light years in diameter, and is accompanied by the dwarf galaxy 6dFGS gJ031016.3-531953 . Together with four other galaxies, it forms the IC 1954 group ( LGG 93 ).

The object was discovered by John Herschel on December 5, 1834 .
