NGC 1241 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is around 179 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 185,000 light years . It probably forms a physically bound pair with NGC 1242 ( Arp 304 ). Together with NGC 1242, NGC 1247 , PGC 11824 and PGC 11937 , it forms the NGC 1241 group .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .

The object was discovered on January 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
