NGC 1217 an active spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is an estimated 276 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 145,000 ly . Together with PGC 11642 , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair .
The galaxy IC 1875 is located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel in 1835 .
