NGC 1209 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E6 in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 110 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1188 , NGC 1192 , NGC 1199 , NGC 1231 .
The object was discovered on December 30, 1785 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
