NGC 1189 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (s) dm in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 111 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 55,000 ly. Together with NGC 1190 , NGC 1191 , NGC 1192 and NGC 1199 , it forms the compact galaxy group HCG 22.
The object was discovered on December 2, 1885 by Francis Preserved Leavenworth using a 66-cm telescope.
