NGC 1201 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 72 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1255 , NGC 1302 , PGC 12011 and PGC 12309 , it forms the NGC 1255 group .

The Type Ia supernova SN 2003hv was observed here.

The object was discovered on October 26, 1785 by the astronomer William Herschel .
