NGC 1196 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 149 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1195 , it forms the galaxy pair Holm 65 .
The galaxies NGC 1200 , NGC 1204 , IC 285 , IC 287 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 22, 1835 .
