IC 285 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sab in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 144 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 45,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1195 , NGC 1196 , NGC 1200 , IC 287 , among others .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 7, 1893 .
