IC 273 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 143 million light years from the Milky Way and is approximately 60,000 light years in diameter. Together with four other galaxies, it forms the NGC 1137 group ( LGG 79 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1153 and IC 277 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on January 6, 1894 .
