history

The area around today's Cherry Hill was originally settled by Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape before the first settlers, mostly from England , arrived there at the end of the 17th century . The first settlement in the area of today's Cherry Hill Township was named Colestown and was located approximately at the height of today's Church Road. The settlement was named after a Samuel Cole, who in 1685 acquired a land area of around four square kilometers. The Colestown settlement originally consisted of two shops, a church, a cemetery and several residential buildings. Later an Isaac Ellis founded a tavern, in the place of which, after the construction of a few houses, the Ellisburg settlement was built. At the end of February 1844, Cherry Hill Township was formed in Gloucester County from parts of Waterford Township and was initially named Delaware Township . The Waterford Town House, built in 1831 in the previous city of Ellisburg, was established as the administrative seat. Only a few days later, on March 13, 1844, the township became part of the newly formed Camden County . In the following years the Delaware Township was downsized several times, on February 23, 1859 parts came to the Stockton Township and on March 3, 1874 to the newly formed city of Merchantville .

The population in Cherry Hill Township grew slowly at first. After the establishment, as a result of territorial transfers, there was even a population decline from 2577 inhabitants in 1850 to 1602 inhabitants ten years later, in 1910 Cherry Hill had 1706 inhabitants. In 1899, the town's church, built in 1751, was destroyed by fire. The Ellisburg Inn was demolished in 1938 in order to build a road. During and after the Second World War there was a strong increase in the population, in 1950 the township exceeded the 10,000-inhabitant mark for the first time. The population in Cherry Hill Township has remained largely constant since the 1980s.

On November 7, 1961, the name of the Delaware Township was changed to Cherry Hill, which is still in use today, to distinguish it from the township of the same name in Hunterdon County . The United States Postal Service advocated renaming it Deltown . Finally, there was a referendum in which the name Cherry Hill prevailed against the proposals Chapel Hill, Cherry Valley and Delaware City. The name Cherry Hill goes back to the Cherry Hill Farm, which was located in the city area.

In 2006, American business magazine Money Cherry Hill listed it as the eighth safest city in the United States.
