Darren Elias (born November 18, 1986 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a professional American poker player . He won the Main Event of the World Poker Tour four times , making him a record holder .

childhood and education

Elias moved around a lot during his childhood as his father Bill worked as a college football coach in a variety of locations . Due to his lack of height, Elias did not play American football , but instead concentrated on swimming and water polo . This earned him a scholarship from the University of Redlands in California . There he studied mathematics and physics . He then began studying quantum physics , which he was unable to master due to his poker trips. So he switched to creative writing , which he completed in 2008. Elias is married and lives in Cherry Hill , New Jersey .

Poker career

Elias came to poker in 2003 as a result of the moneymaker boom. He has been playing online under the nickname darrenelias on PokerStars , Full Tilt Poker and partypoker since July 2006 and has won more than 4.5 million US dollars in tournaments. Since he is forbidden to play on the platforms from his place of residence, he can now be found in the branches PokerStars NJ and partypoker NJ as oldmoneyD and kinginthenorth . He also plays under his real name on GGPoker . Since 2008 Elias has also been participating in renowned live tournaments .

In June 2009 Elias was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and cashed in a tournament of the No Limit Hold'em variant . In mid-July 2010, he reached the final table at the main event of the Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza and finished the tournament in second place for just under $ 200,000 in prize money. At the end of February 2011, Elias also finished second at a high roller event in Los Angeles for around 150,000 US dollars. In mid-September 2011, he reached the final table at the Main Event of the World Poker Tour (WPT) for the first time and finished fifth in Atlantic City for $ 230,000. At the beginning of May 2012 Elias sat at the final table of the WPT Main Event again and landed in Orange Park in third place for just under 150,000 US dollars. In late 2014, he won the WPT Main Event twice in a row. In mid-September 2014 he prevailed against 1,225 other players at the WPT Borgata Open and secured a prize of just under 850,000 US dollars. At the beginning of November 2014 Elias also won on Sint Maarten and received an additional 130,000 US dollars. In early August 2015, he finished third in the WPT Main Event in Durant for more than $ 300,000 in prize money. Elias also took third place in the Deep Stack Extravaganza at the end of June 2016, which brought him almost 300,000 US dollars. At the end of February 2017, he won the Main Event of the World Poker Tour in Niagara Falls, Canada . For this, he beat a field of 488 other participants and received almost 330,000 US dollars in prize money as well as his third WPT title as the fifth player. At the end of May 2018, Elias secured his fourth title at the WPT Main Event and won the Bobby Baldwin Classic at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with a prize of almost $ 400,000. Since then he has been the sole WPT record winner with four titles . In March 2019, Elias sat at the final table of a WPT main event again, finishing third in Los Angeles for more than $ 470,000.

Overall, Elias has earned over $ 7.5 million in poker in live tournaments. From April to November 2016 he played as part of the Sao Paulo Mets in the Global Poker League and made it to the playoffs with his team.
