Main Event of the World Series of Poker
The Main Event of the World Series of Poker (from Main Event , English for main event ) is a poker tournament that is held once a year in Las Vegas . The winner can officially call himself the poker world champion.
history
In 1970 Johnny Moss won the first World Series of Poker chosen by the other participants and received a silver cup for it. Since 1971 , the winner has been determined by a tournament in freeze-out mode . The buy-in for the tournament in the variant No Limit Texas Hold'em is 10000 dollars . Doyle Brunson won the final hand 10-2 in 1976 and 1977 (back to back) . Both times this hand became a full house, hence it is also called the "Doyle Brunson hand". 1979 won with Hal Fowler for the first time an amateur the main event. It was not until 1999 that Noel Furlong achieved such an amateur victory again. Jack Straus ("A chip and a chair is all you need") won in 1982 after only having a single $ 500 chip left. In 1995, Barbara Enright was the first and so far only woman at the final table. Chris Moneymaker qualified for the Main Event in an online tournament on PokerStars in 2003 with a buy-in of just $ 39 and then won the tournament for $ 2.5 million in prize money. This triggered a poker boom that increased the prize money for the winner to US $ 5 million in 2004 . One speaks to this day of the so-called moneymaker effect, as many amateurs try their luck at the WSOP. In November 2011 , a German-speaking player, Pius Heinz, won the event for the first time. Reigning poker world champion is the German-Iranian Hossein Ensan .
In early April 2019, the tournament was named Event of the Year 2018 at the Global Poker Awards .
mode
Registration for the main event is spread over three days. Then play until only nine players remain. The final table was played from 2008 to 2016 in early November of the same year, so the players at the final table were also referred to as the November Nine . Since 2017, the final table has been played again at the end of July.
transmission
The US TV broadcaster ESPN broadcast summaries in several episodes ahead of the final table in November, commented on by Norman Chad and Lon McEachern and moderated by Kara Scott . The final table was broadcast live and exclusively on ESPN. The German television station Sport1 broadcast the ESPN episodes at the beginning of the new year with commentary from Michael Körner . The paid portal PokerGO has been broadcasting the main event live every day since 2017 .
