Thomas "Tom" McEvoy (born November 14, 1944 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) is a professional American poker player and poker book author. He won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker in 1983 and is a four-time bracelet winner .

Personal

McEvoy was a professional accountant , but after he was fired in 1978, he decided to become a professional poker player. He learned to play poker at the age of five, which caused difficulties in his elementary school.

Poker career

Career

McEvoy won the main tournament of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas in 1983 in the longest heads-up against Rod Peate and received a prize of 540,000 US dollars . The match lasted over seven hours and was only replaced in 2006 by the final between David Reese and Andy Bloch in the US $ 50,000 HORSE event. McEvoy was the first main event winner to win the $ 10,000 entry fee through a satellite tournament. He is a consistent non-smoker and convinced Benny Binion, the CEO of the casino that hosted the WSOP, to make the WSOP a non-smoking tournament.

To date, McEvoy has won more than $ 3 million in official live poker tournaments. He has authored more than a dozen poker books, some with fellow players like TJ Cloutier , Brad Daugherty , Don Vines and Max Stern . McEvoy was a columnist for Card Player Magazine and a representative of the online poker platform PokerStars . In 2013, McEvoy was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame .
