Erik Seidel (born November 6, 1959 in New York City , New York ) is a professional American poker player .

Seidel is one of the most popular and best poker players in the world. He is an eight-time bracelet winner of the World Series of Poker and has won the Main Event of the World Poker Tour , the Super High Roller of the European Poker Tour , the A $ 250,000 Challenge of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship . With over $ 37.5 million in tournament prize money, he is the fourth most successful poker player in the world.

Seidel was at the top of the poker world rankings for a total of 15 weeks , most recently in February 2012. In October 2010 he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame . As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , Seidel was named as one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .

Personal

Seidel played backgammon professionally for eight years and tried his luck on Wall Street before successfully entering the poker business. He lives in Las Vegas .

Poker career

Career

1988–1994: Wins his first three bracelets

Seidel has been participating in renowned live tournaments since 1998 . Early in his career he was a member of the Mayfair Club, a group of poker players that included Howard Lederer , Dan Harrington and Mickey Appleman .

Seidel made his first money placement in mid-May 1988 at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas . There he reached the final heads-up against Johnny Chan in the main event . Seidel lost the duel, which is part of the feature film Rounders , and received prize money of $ 280,000 for his second place . In August 1988 he won a tournament at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles and secured a prize of $ 144,000. At the 1991 WSOP , he finished runner- up in a Limit Hold'em variant , earning him $ 105,000. In January 1992, Seidel finished second in a tournament of the Queens Poker Classic at the Four Queens Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, which was endowed with 100,000 US dollars. At the 1992 WSOP , he won a Limit Hold'em event and received a bracelet and the grand prize of $ 168,000. 1995–2001: Several WSOP final tables and two other bracelets

In March 1995, Seidel achieved its first cash placement outside of the United States at the Aviation Club de France in Paris . At the 1997 WSOP , he reached three Limit Hold'em final tables, winning more than $ 150,000 in prize money. In January 2002, Seidel took second place behind Humberto Brenes at the World Poker Open in Tunica and received almost 260,000 US dollars. At the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Seidel won a mixed-variant event in July 2002 with a grand prize of over 45,000 US dollars. In mid-December 2002 he finished second in the main event of the United States Poker Championship in Atlantic City , which was paid for with 124,200 US dollars. At the Euro Finals of Poker in Paris in February 2003, Seidel also came second and received more than 60,000 euros . At the 2003 WSOP he won his sixth bracelet in Pot Limit Omaha and was about three weeks later, a third party at an event in No Limit Hold'em . 2007–2010: Eighth bracelet and WPT title

In mid-January 2007 Seidel finished second in the A $ 100,000 Challenge of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship in Melbourne and received 550,000 Australian dollars .
