Vanessa K. Selbst (born July 9, 1984 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is a former professional American poker player .

She is a three-time bracelet winner of the World Series of Poker and, with a cash prize of just under 12 million US dollars in live tournaments, the most successful woman in poker history. For two weeks from June 18 to July 1, 2014, she was the first and so far only woman at the top of the poker world rankings . On December 31, 2017, she announced the end of her career as a professional poker player on Facebook .

As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , Selbst was named as one of two women on the list of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .

Personal

Myself grew up in a Jewish family that valued games, especially those that required logical and deductive thinking, such as Bridge . Her mother already played poker to finance her studies. Vanessa Selbst attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a freshman . From there she moved to Yale University . In 2012 she graduated from this university degree in law ( law degree ). In 2015 she passed the New York bar exam .

She played tennis and hockey at MIT and rugby at Yale . At Yale, she also headed the Queer-Straight Alliance ("Gay / Hetero Alliance") student association . Selbst has been married to Miranda Forster since August 2013.

Poker career

Career

When she was around 20, while at Yale, she started playing poker. Initially, she predominantly preferred the variants No Limit Texas Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha online , both in the form of cash games and tournament poker . From 2007 she played major live tournaments. Even belonged to Team PokerStars until the end of 2017 and played on the corresponding platform under the nickname V. Selbst . She also worked as a poker coach for the DeucesCracked poker school .

She herself was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in July 2006 : She finished seventh in the $ 2000 No Limit Hold'em , which earned her more than 100,000 US dollars . The following year, she won in the Heads-Up Championship of the 2007 WSOP fourth place, which was paid just under $ 130,000. A year later, in 2008 , she finished third in the same tournament for nearly $ 110,000. Even surpassed this success by winning an event in Pot Limit Omaha , which earned her the first bracelet and a prize of just under 230,000 US dollars. In April 2010, she won the PokerStars North American Poker Tour Main Event in Uncasville , which earned her $ 750,000. At the main event of the Partouche Poker Tour in Cannes , Selbst also emerged as the winner at the beginning of September 2010 and won 1.3 million euros . She received £ 145,000 for her fourth place in the European Poker Tour (EPT) high roller in London in October 2010 . In April 2011, she again prevailed in the main event of the PokerStars North American Poker Tour , this time receiving $ 450,000. In January 2013, Selbst the High Roller of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventures (PCA) won in the Bahamas and received a prize money of over 1.4 million US dollars. In September 2013 she finished the main event of the Borgata Poker Open in second place and received prize money of just under 500,000 US dollars. In January 2014, Selbst reached the final table of both the High Roller and Super High Roller at the PCA, earning more than $ 1.3 million. At the 2014 WSOP , she won her third bracelet with a prize of around $ 870,000. At the end of June 2015, she prevailed at the Super High Roller Celebrity Shootout at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and received one million US dollars. From April to November 2016 , Selbst played as part of the London Royals in the Global Poker League and made it to the playoffs with her team.
