In 2007 there were bracelets to be won alongside the prize money

The World Series of Poker 2007 was the 38th edition of the Poker World Championship and took place on June 1, 2007 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas . It ended with the final table of the Main Event on July 17, 2007.

Tournaments

structure

A total of 55 poker tournaments in the variants Texas Hold'em , Omaha Hold'em , Seven Card Stud , Razz and the mixed variants HORSE and HOSE were on the tournament schedule. The tournaments include the Tournament of Champions and the most expensive tournament at 50,000 US dollars in the HORSE variant . A heads-up tournament based on the National Heads-Up Poker Championship was held for the first time . Furthermore, a so-called World Championship Event (WCE) took place for each variant . The winner received a special bracelet and was allowed to call himself the world champion in each variant. A charity tournament organized by Annie Duke was played the day before the main event . The tournament, called Ante Up for Africa , had a buy-in of $ 5,000 and was won by Dan Shak . No bracelet was awarded and half of the prize pool was donated and the other half paid out to the players.

All tournaments were once again hosted by Harrah's Entertainment at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas , Nevada . The official sponsor of the tournament series was PartyPoker .

Changes to previous years

The new cards caused a stir

Compared to previous years, the structure of the tournaments was changed. For the first time, each player received chips worth twice the buy-in of the respective tournament. The blinds also increased, but the minimum stakes in relation to the buy-in were lower than in previous years. Harrah’s announced in advance that the distribution of the prize money would change. This meant that the top placed got less and the players at the end of the rush to get more money.

In addition, there was a small change that meant a change for the players. The official card supplier Bicycle presented its new deck of cards before the tournament . The symbols of the cards were now arranged in such a way that the players only had to lift the cards slightly at the corners to see the hand. However, there have been numerous complaints from players because the symbols on the cards were difficult to match. It even went so far that some players asked for their buy-in back. So it happened that after three days , Harrah’s decided to play with the usual cards again.

useful information

The 15-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth
  • Most of the tournaments were scheduled for three days. Exceptions were the five-day $ 50,000 HORSE tournament, the small stud tournaments, which were only spread over two days, and the eleven-day main event.
  • The record of the youngest tournament winner was set in the first tournament. At the time of his triumph, Steve Billirakis was only ten days above the minimum age of 21 years.
  • In Phoenix living Tom Schneider took victory in the tournaments number 5 and number 46 and thus was the only player who won two bracelets. As a result of these successes, he was also named Player of the Year .
  • Phil Hellmuth won his eleventh bracelet in event # 15 and has been the sole leader after tournament victories ever since. He is now a 15-time bracelet winner.
  • With Michael Keiner and Katja Thater , two Germans won a bracelet. In addition, Thater was the only woman to triumph in a regular tournament.
  • Michael Binger and Chad Brown were the most frequent in the prize ranks with eight money finishes .
  • Tom Schneider , Chris Björin , Humberto Brenes , Robert Mizrachi and Thor Hansen sat at a final table three times.
  • Due to the huge crowd at the $ 1,500 tournaments in No Limit Hold'em , players were moved to an adjoining tent to play. Overall, the organization of the WSOP by the organizer Harrah's Entertainment was described by many players as miserable.
  • The Bellagio Cup as part of the World Poker Tour took place from June 11th to July 15th at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. This overlaying of the dates was seen by many professionals as disrespect for the World Series .

WSOP Europe 2007 in London

The famous Leicester Square

The World Series of Poker took place in Europe from September 6-16, 2007. There were three tournaments in the London casino The Casino at the Empire held in which regular bracelets could be won. The casino is located in Leicester Square and was only opened in spring 2007. In addition, two more casinos were used for the main tournament to split the field of participants.

The entry fees were significantly higher than at the WSOP in Las Vegas. The organizer calculated with significantly fewer participants and wanted to stabilize the prize pool. In addition, the top stars feel much more attracted by the higher buy-in than if "small" tournaments were held.

The £ 10,000 main tournament was scheduled for seven days. The HORSE tournament should last three days and the Pot Limit Omaha tournament two days.

Thomas “The Buzzer” Bihl won the first bracelet outside of Las Vegas. At the HORSE tournament, he won the final table over Alexander Kravchenko , Chris Ferguson , Kirk Morrison and Jennifer Harman, among others .

The second tournament was won by Italian Dario Alioto and £ 234,390 in prize money.

At the time of WSOP Europe , the Main Event winner was only 18 years old. The Norwegian Annette Obrestad , who has already achieved fame through her Internet success, has won more than two million US dollars and is thus the youngest bracelet winner at the World Series of Poker .
