Gavin Smith (born September 4, 1968 in Guelph , Ontario , † January 14, 2019 in Houston , Texas ) was a professional Canadian poker player . Smith earned in his career live tournament prize money of more than 6 million dollars and was nicknamed Birdguts . He won a bracelet of the World Series of Poker , as well as a title in the main event of the World Poker Tour , where he 2005/06 as Player of the Year award.

Personal

Smith learned to play cards from his father through cribbage and rummy . He started playing poker at the age of 26. He became a croupier in 1996 and opened his own poker club two years later. Prior to his career as a professional poker player, he worked as a taxi driver and on a golf course . Smith last lived in Houston, Texas, where he died in January 2019 at the age of 50.

Poker career

Smith landed his first live prize money at the World Poker Finals in Mashantucket in late 1998 . There he won his first live tournament at the beginning of December 1999 and secured a prize money of almost 15,000 US dollars . In early May 2003 , Smith was the first time in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas successful and came at an event of the variant Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Split in the money. The following year, he won the Main Event of the 2004 WSOP 52nd place, which was paid for with $ 45,000. In mid-May 2005, Smith played at the Mirage Poker Showdown at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. He first won a side event with a prize of more than 150,000 US dollars, which also included a place in the main event of the series. Ten days later he prevailed against 316 other players and secured a title on the World Poker Tour (WPT) and the highest prize money of his career with more than 1.1 million US dollars. At the 2005 WSOP, now being played at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas , Smith made it into the money four times. In October 2005, Smith reached the final table of the WPT Main Event again and took third place at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, endowed with nearly $ 330,000. At the 2006 WSOP , Smith finished eleventh in the first ever HORSE Championship for more than $ 200,000. In October 2010, he reached the final table at the WPT Main Event in Niagara Falls and took second place, worth over 600,000 Canadian dollars . At the 2010 WSOP , Smith won an event in Texas Hold'em with mixed limits and secured a prize of nearly $ 270,000 and a bracelet . At the WPT in late November 2012 in Kahnawake , he sat at the final table of the main event and finished fourth for more than $ 210,000. In the WSOP 2016 reached Smith final tables in the 8-game as well as a mix of Pot-Limit Omaha 8 or Better , and Big O . He won his last live prize money in mid-July 2017 at the Main Event of the World Series of Poker 2017 .
