A poker hand consists of the best combination of mostly five cards.

The Poker Variants List contains a detailed listing and description of the most popular variants of the card game Poker that have evolved from the original game.

Terms

In the following, only the English terms of the following technical terms are used.

English term translation meaning
Hole cards Start cards, punch cards The face-down cards that each player receives.
Community Cards Community cards The cards that are placed face up on the table.
Ante Basic mission A bet that must be placed by every player.
Blind Minimum bet Bets that only need to be placed by two players.

All known poker variants can be classified into the three categories Draw , Stud and Hold'em . The difference between these three basic categories lies mainly in the way in which players receive their cards. Most poker variants can also be played in different limits , which means that the ability to bet is limited depending on the limit.

Draw

Draw poker is the name given to the variants in which each player receives only his own cards, i.e. cards that can only be seen and used by him. With all common variations there are five such. Another feature of this category is that a player can replace any number of his cards with new ones.

By far the best-known variant of Draw Poker is Five Card Draw , which was the most frequently played variant of poker for a long time and is still often played privately today. The variant is particularly well known as a symbol of the Wild West , as five card draw was often played in saloons . After betting, the hands of the players who have not dropped out are compared. The winner receives the pot .

Hold'em

Hold'em (abbreviation of hold them , dt. Consider them ) are the variants in which each player cards face down ( hole cards ) receives. In addition, the so-called community cards are gradually revealed. The player has to put together his best five cards ( hand ) from his own, face-down and open cards . Depending on the variant, the number of cards a player can use is limited.

Some poker providers offer a modified version of Hold'em Poker, such as Zoom Poker from PokerStars. Zoom Poker is a very fast type of poker, which is intended for larger tournaments or for playing on the Internet, because in order to speed up the game every player changes the table immediately if he folds. This should avoid the annoying wait for the new round.

Each player has to pay the ante first . Then all participants receive three cards from the croupier. He can now double his bet or pass. Then the first common card comes on the table, after another betting round the next one. Now the player's hand is paid out by the bank . The special thing about this variant is that the players do not play against each other, but each one against the bank. Ante The variant of their property is mainly attractive for casinos. This game has a large bank advantage of 2.83% compared to other games (e.g. Blackjack : 0.475%). Hence, it is quite profitable for the bank.

Each player is dealt four hole cards , only two of which can be used in their final hand. As in Texas Hold'em, there are five cards on the table. However, the player must use exactly three of these community cards to form his hand. At the end of a round, the best combination of the two hole and three community cards counts . Stud

Stud poker is the name given to the variants in which the player receives both face-up and face-down cards that are only visible to him ( hole cards ). Another feature that most variations have in common is that the position of the player opening the betting round changes very often during a hand.

Razz is identical to Seven Card Stud , except that Razz aims for the worst possible hand. The ace is the lowest card, straights and flushes do not count as such. This makes A2345 the best possible hand. Always fixed limit with ante Razz is, among others, at the annual WSOP played  
Tropical Stud
( Oasis Stud Caribbean Stud )
The player places an ante and receives five cards. The dealer also receives five cards, one of which is open. The player can now decide whether to call, i.e. add twice the ante or fold , and thus give up his ante . The dealer now reveals. If he has a hand worse than A K , each player receives double the ante . If he has AK or better, the individual hands are compared to the dealer's hand. If the player holds a better hand, he will receive twice the amount of the bet and, depending on the size of the hand, an additional payout. Ante Often offered by casinos. The players do not play against each other, but individually against the bank.

Limits

The limit is the way in which players can place bets. While some variants can be played in several limits , the playability of others is partially restricted in different limits . In the largest tournament series, the World Series of Poker , the three most popular limits, no , pot and fixed limit , are played.

Dice poker

Dice poker is played with special dice and not with cards . Dice poker is not a variant in itself, but a category that is itself divided into variants.

Poker)
One of the two players announces his combination to his opponent. However, this does not have to be correct. If the opponent recognizes the lie, he has won, if he is mistaken, his opponent wins. If he believes his opponent, he has to announce a higher combination himself and the guessing starts again. This variant is comparable to the drinking game variant from “ Mäxchen ”.
