Poker Dice or Open Dice Poker is a dice game inspired by the card game Poker .

The rules

Poker Dice is a game for two people. You play with a set of five poker dice, but each player preferably plays with their own set.

A player starts, shakes the dice in his cup and throws his sentence into the dice cup . The aim of the game is to achieve a higher poker combination than your opponent.

The combinations (hands)

The combinations are in descending order

  • Five of a kind , five of a kind , e.g. B. five tens.
  • Four of a kind , four of a kind , e.g. B. four boys.
  • Full house , three of a kind and a pair, e.g. B. three aces and two queens.
  • High straight , the five consecutive values A – K – D – B – 10 and
  • Low straight , the five consecutive values K – D – B – 10–9 (see below).
  • Three of a kind , three of a kind , e.g. B. three aces.
  • Two pairs , twice two of a kind, e.g. B. two jacks and two nines; the highest pair is used here.
  • One pair , two of a kind, e.g. B. two tens.
  • Runt , no combination, e.g. B. A-D-B-10-9.

In the case of similar combinations, the ranking is based on the rules of the poker game with cards; so beat z. B. "Three tens, an ace and a queen" means a hand of "three tens, an ace and a nine".

If the player is not satisfied with his first throw, he may pick up one or more dice and throw them again. In the course of a game, however, a player may throw a maximum of three times .

If he throws only one pair in the first litter , he can z. B. pick up three dice to try to get three of a kind , full house or even four or five of a kind with a subsequent roll .

When the first player has finished rolling, it is his opponent's turn. He too has three throws available, especially if the first player ends his game after the first or second throw (see below).

Whoever can show the higher combination wins. If both players show the exact same combination, the game is a tie.

Betting rounds

In open dice poker - if you are playing for money and not just for drinks - you can bet with cards in several betting intervals in the same way as playing poker - this makes Poker Dice a very demanding game.

Before starting a game, a minimum and a maximum , e.g. B. five times the minimum.

  • Before the first throw, both players place an ante in the amount of the minimum in the pot .
  • The first round of betting follows before the second roll. The thrower can now either pay an additional amount into the pot (Bet) or wait (Check) . Then his opponent has his say. He can either hold the additional bet (call) , increase it (raise) or fold it and give the game a loss. If the thrower did not bet, his opponent can either wait or place a bet. Only one bet and one raise is possible in each round.

The following rounds of betting are carried out according to the same pattern

  • before the third throw of the first player,
  • before the first throw of the second player (see below),
  • before the second throw by the second player,
  • before the third throw by the second player.

additions

  • Whether or not you can bet before the first throw of the second player is handled very differently - this point should be clarified before starting a game.
  • Spectators, so-called lapwings , can bet among themselves on the victory of one or the other player at mutually agreed odds .
  • If more than two people take part in the game, no betting rounds are carried out and only wins are counted. In this case, the procedure is often such that if the first player ends his game after one or two throws, the other players are only allowed to throw the dice once or twice. Each player may start a round as the first player; a game is over as soon as a player has achieved five wins. The winner receives the prize and, depending on the agreement, the losers receive the difference in points. This way of playing is called Eskalero-Start-Poker in the Piatnik Wien rulebook .
  • At Poker Dice is often played without straights, this should be agreed before the start of a match.
  • Poker Dice is also often played with the dice of the eye. In the USA, one (Ace) is often the highest value, ie 1–6–5–4–3–2, with the exception of straights. H. High straight is 6–5–4–3–2 and low straight is 5–4–3–2–1.
