Daniel Negreanu (born July 26, 1974 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a professional Canadian poker player .
Negreanu is one of the most popular and best poker players in the world. He is six-time bracelet winner of the World Series of Poker , two-time champions of the World Poker Tour and more than 42 million US dollars in tournament prize money by Bryn Kenney and Justin Bonomo the third most successful poker players in the world and the most successful Canadian poker player .
Negreanu has been named Player of the Year twice on the World Series of Poker , once as Player of the Year on the World Poker Tour, and twice as Player of the Year from Card Player Magazine . From the end of October 2013 he was at the top of the poker world rankings for the first time for 10 weeks in a row . In total, he held this position for 19 weeks , most recently in April 2014. In October 2014, Negreanu was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame . As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , he was named one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .
Personal
Negreanu's parents immigrated to Canada from Romania in 1967 . Shortly before graduating from high school , he dropped out of high school and took part in legal and illegal gambling in and around Toronto . During this time he met Evelyn Ng , who later also became a professional poker player and with whom he was dating for some time. After saving some money, Negreanu went to Las Vegas to pursue his dream of becoming a professional poker player. After several losses, he returned to Toronto to save some money again.
Negreanu was married to Lori Lin Weber from August 2005 to November 2007 and lived with her in Las Vegas. In May 2019, he married actress Amanda Leatherman.
Negreanu loves to wear ice hockey shirts and is a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs . He's been vegan since a bet with Erick Lindgren . Negreanu played an extra role in the poker film Glück im Spiel in 2007 and had a cameo appearance as the poker opponent of the mutant Gambit in the X-Men film X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009 . Also in 2009, Negreanu starred in the music video for Katy Perry's single Waking Up In Vegas .
Poker career
Online poker
In 2003 he started his own online poker room called Full Contact Poker , but sold the rights to Big Stack Enterprises in 2005 in order to simultaneously offer himself as an exclusive player in the virtual card room. In June 2007, PokerStars took over the competitor and Negreanu, under the nickname KidPoker, became their advertising medium and member of Team PokerStars until 2019 . On the platform, he won a Spring Championship of Online Poker tournament in 2013 and a title at the World Championship of Online Poker in 2016 . Negreanu has been an advertising medium for the GGPoker platform since November 2019 .
High stakes poker
Negreanu is one of four players who appeared in all seven seasons of the US poker format High Stakes Poker , which played cash game from 2006 to 2011 . He was the only player not to miss an episode. At the end of the fourth season, he was also the participant with the longest total playing time at the table.
In the second season he was involved in a spectacular hand with Gus Hansen , in which Negreanu came up with 6 ♠ 6 ♥ and 5 ♦ 5 ♣ . With the community cards 9 ♣ 6 ♦ 5 ♥ 5 ♠ 8 ♠ was his full house the Vierling Hansen inferior. As a result, he lost more than $ 575,700 in the pot. This pot was the highest in the series by the end of season three. Negreanu received a lot of sympathy from poker fans through this hand, as he kept his composure despite the high loss.
Live tournament poker
Career
1997–2003: Winning his first two bracelets
Negreanu has participated in prestigious live tournaments since 1997 .
Negreanu won his first tournament prize money at smaller events in Las Vegas , Los Angeles and Mashantucket . In the latter city he won two tournaments of the World Poker Finals in the variant Limit Hold'em in December 1997 and secured over 50,000 US dollars . At the end of April 1998 he was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas and won a tournament in Pot Limit Hold'em . For this, Negreanu prevailed against 228 other players and received a prize of around 170,000 US dollars and, as the youngest player to date, a bracelet . In mid-December 1999 he won the United States Poker Championship in Atlantic City with a grand prize of $ 210,000. At the 2001 WSOP , he finished eleventh in the main event, worth almost 65,000 US dollars. Two years later he won his second bracelet in the mixed variant SHOE at the 2003 WSOP and secured a prize of around 100,000 US dollars. A week later he reached the final heads-up at another event , but had to admit defeat to Phil Hellmuth and received prize money of more than 210,000 US dollars for second place.
Overall, Negreanu's tournament winnings by the end of 2003 were over $ 2 million. Because of his success at a young age, he was nicknamed "Kid Poker".
2004: First WSOP Player of the Year and two WPT titles
At the end of January 2004, Negreanu sat at the final table of the main event of the first PokerStars Caribbean Adventures (PCA) in the Bahamas and finished the tournament in third place for just under 200,000 US dollars. At the Main Event of the World Poker Tour (WPT) played on a cruise ship , he finished second in mid-March 2004 and received around 675,000 US dollars. Three months later, Negreanu won his second WPT title at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas , which earned him just under $ 1.8 million in prize money. In the 2004 calendar year, he earned a total of just under 4.5 million US dollars in prize money, with which Negreanu screwed his total tournament winnings to over 6.5 million US dollars.
2005–2008: WPT Player of the Year and fourth bracelet

2009–2013: Two more bracelets and again WSOP Player of the Year
At the 2009 WSOP , Negreanu had eight cash placements and two final tables. Since 2016: Highly endowed tournament results
At the 2016 WSOP , Negreanu made the money nine times. In mid-January 2017, he finished fifth in the high roller of the PokerStars Championship in the Bahamas for just under 270,000 US dollars.
