Christopher Bryan "Chris" Moneymaker (born November 21, 1975 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is a professional American poker player . He won the World Poker Championship in 2003 after qualifying online , sparking a poker boom.
Live and act
Moneymaker graduated from the University of Tennessee and was there Master in Accounting ( Accounting ). He then worked as an accountant in Tennessee. In 2003, he won on the online poker platform PokerStars a place in the 10,000 US dollars expensive Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Moneymaker played online under the nickname Money800 . He had previously deposited only $ 39 and then secured the place in promotion tournaments. He won the tournament at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas and received the first prize worth 2.5 million US dollars and a bracelet . His most memorable hand was played heads-up against Sam Farha when he moved all-in on the river with only one king as the highest card . Farha then fitted his pair of nine, which drastically changed the course of the duel. Moneymaker won the final hand when he beat Farha's hand J ♥ 10 ♦ with 5 ♦ 4 ♠ on a board of J ♠ 5 ♠ 4 ♣ 8 ♦ 5 ♥ as Moneymaker had a full house . However, Farha won a rematch on PokerStars a month later . At the 2011 WSOP , Moneymaker defeated Farha again. In early March 2004, Moneymaker played the main event of the World Poker Tour in San José , where he finished second, earning him $ 200,000 in prize money. After winning the WSOP Main Event, Moneymaker quit his job to work as a spokesperson for Harrah's Entertainment and PokerStars , and to play in major tournaments.
In total, Moneymaker has earned almost 4 million US dollars with poker in live tournaments. In mid-July 2019, he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame .
His last name is not a stage name , as he u. a. on Stefan Raab's television show TV totally betrayed. Rather, it is a modification of a German surname that reads something like Nurmacher . In the 2008 comedy film All In All Or Nothing , Moneymaker made a cameo as a poker player. From April to November 2016 , Moneymaker played as the team manager of the Las Vegas Moneymakers in the Global Poker League , but missed the playoffs with his team.
