Joseph “Joe” Hachem ( Arabic جوزف هاشم, “Ha-shem” spoken; born March 11, 1966 in Lebanon ) is a Lebanese - Australian poker player . He won the World Poker Championship in 2005 .
Personal
Hachem is originally from Lebanon. He and his family moved to Australia in 1972 . Hachem gave up his chiropractic career in 2002 because of a circulatory disorder in his hands. Instead, he decided to focus entirely on poker.
Hachem is married and has four children. He runs a pawn shop in Pascoe Vale and enjoys playing golf . In 2009 he played a supporting role in the film Prey - Outback Overkill as a hotel worker. He also made a cameo as a poker player in the 2008 comedy film All in - All or Nothing .
Poker career
On July 16, 2005, Hachem won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas , beating 5619 players, earning him $ 7.5 million in prize money as well as a bracelet . Hachem survived a situation in which all of his chips were at stake in the main tournament when he only had a pair of three in hand just before the prize money ranks. However, another 3 came on the flop , so Hachem won. For most of the last day, Hachem had few chips. That only changed when there were only three players left. Hashem's winning hand was 7 ♣ 3 ♠ , one of the weakest starting hands in Texas Hold'em . After he had gone along an increase from 300,000 to 700,000 chips before the flop, on the flop were 6 ♥ 5 ♦ 4 ♦ and a road . The turn came the A ♠ , giving his opponent Steve Dannenmann the highest pair and an open ended straight draw with his starting hand of A ♦ 3 ♣ . Hachem bet, Dannenmann raised, Hachem stepped in and Dannenmann called. Dannemann could only have reached a split pot if a 7 had come on the river , which would have both had a straight from 3 to 7, but the 4 ♣ appeared on the river, which secured Hachem the victory. Unlike previous winners Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker , Hachem did not qualify for the tournament online , but paid the $ 10,000 buy-in himself. Just like Raymer and Moneymaker, Hachem was then a representative of PokerStars .
At the 2006 WSOP , Hachem finished second in $ 2,500 shorthanded no-limit hold'em when his A ♠ Q ♣ was beaten by Dutch Boyds A ♦ 5 ♥ on a board by A ♥ K ♣ 9 ♠ J ♣ 5 ♦ because Boyd was two Couples had. In December 2006, Hachem won more than $ 2.2 million and his first title at the World Poker Tour Main Event at Bellagio , the main event of the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic . In the second episode of the TV poker series Poker After Dark in 2007, Hachem won the first episode against Greg Raymer , Jamie Gold , Huck Seed , Doyle Brunson and heads-up against Johnny Chan .
Overall, Hachem has more than 12.5 million with poker live tournament dollars earned, making it the most successful Australian poker player .
