JJ "Noel" Furlong (born December 25, 1937 in Dublin ) is an Irish carpet manufacturer and hobby poker player . He won in 1999 the poker world championship .

Personal

Furlong owns a company that sells carpets and has over $ 100 million in annual sales. This made him a millionaire even before his poker success. He owns racehorses and was a horse trainer . Furlong got his nickname "Noel" because he was born on Christmas Day .

Career

Furlong started playing poker in 1983. Since he is heavily used by his company, he only played poker infrequently. On his first visit to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas in 1989 , he finished sixth in the main tournament . Ten years later, Furlong won the WSOP 1999 Main Event for $ 1 million and a bracelet .

Up to Andy Black 's fifth place at the 2005 WSOP , Furlong was the most successful Irish poker player by tournament prize money. In total, Furlong has won more than $ 1.1 million in live poker tournaments.
