The Main Event of the 2008 World Series of Poker was the main event of the 39th staging of the Poker World Championship in Las Vegas .

The main event of the World Series of Poker began on 3 July and was on July 14, after reaching the final table, interrupted.

In April 2008, Harrah's Entertainment , the organizer, announced that for the first time in the almost forty-year history of the event, the final table would be postponed to a later date, November 9th. Thus, one hopes to increase the attractiveness of the tournament for the media, customers and fans. The last two remaining players competed on November 10, 2008 to take the crown of World Champion . The following evening, the final table was broadcast on ESPN .

As in the previous year, the first game day was divided into four starting days with the official names 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d. A maximum of 3000 players were allowed on each starting day. After the start days there was a day off before day 2a began, on which the remaining players from days 1a and 1b started. On day 2b, the rest of days 1c and 1d played on. Only on day three were all the remaining players in the main event in the tournament room at the same time.

The entire tournament was played at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas . The total of 6,844 participants had to pay a buy-in of US $ 10,000 each, and there were 666 paid places for them. Best woman was Tiffany Michelle , who finished 17th for more than $ 330,000.
