Thuan B. "Scotty" Nguyen ( Vietnamese Thuận B. Nguyễn ; born October 28, 1962 in Nha Trang , Vietnam ) is a professional Vietnamese - American poker player .

Nguyen has been playing poker in live tournament more than 12.5 million US dollars earned. He is five-time bracelet winner of the World Series of Poker and once won the Main Event of the World Poker Tour . As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , Nguyen was named as one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .

Poker career

Career

Nguyen was one of the most active players in professional poker. From 2000 to 2004 he completed more than 100 tournaments in the prize ranks. He won the main tournament of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas in 1998 and secured a total of five bracelets in this tournament series.

Nguyen regularly says “baby” and “yeah baby” in the game and is very emotional. He coined the phrase “That's poker, baby” for an unhappy lost hand, a so-called bad beat . In the final hand of the 1998 WSOP main event, a full house (9-9-8-8-8) was on the table as community cards . Nguyen said to his opponent Kevin McBride that if he called, it would all be over (original: You call, gonna be all over, baby ). McBride called and the tournament was over when Nguyen had a nine in his hand, beating McBridge's “Eights Full” with “Nines Full”, who played the full house on the board.

Having already several final tables World Poker Tour had reached won a tournament Nguyen in January 2006 when he Michael Mizrachi in the heads-up at the Gold Strike World Poker Open defeated the fourth season. At the 2007 WSOP Main Event , Nguyen finished eleventh. This achievement is regarded so extremely highly by experts and connoisseurs of the poker industry because the number of participants had increased extremely during this time.

At the $ 50,000 HORSE event in 2008, Nguyen defeated the just 23-year-old Michael DeMichele heads-up and was thus richer by almost two million dollars and what is probably the most prestigious title at the WSOP. There was still some criticism, however, as Nguyen appeared at the final table very drunk and regularly cursed the other players and the service staff in the casino. Erick Lindgren , who was eliminated in third place, commented on this with “Can't beat the drunk today”. Nguyen is the only player to win the two most prestigious tournaments at the WSOP, the Main Event (1998) and the HORSE Event (2008).

Nguyen was a guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in April 2004 . He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2013 , having previously been nominated but not elected four times.
