In contrast to the following tournament series, which were decided by a freeze-out tournament , the winner in 1970 was chosen by a vote. Jack Binion invited America's seven best poker players to his Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas to decide who was America's best poker player. Johnny Moss was named the World's Best Poker Player by Thomas Preston , Brian Roberts , Doyle Brunson , Walter Pearson , Crandall Addington and Carl Cannon . He received a silver cup for it.

According to a dubious legend, it took two votes to determine the best player in the world. In the first vote, all players should vote for the best poker player in the world and everyone would vote for themselves. In the second vote, however, the second best player was asked and Moss won the vote.
