Gregory "Greg" Paul Raymer (born June 25, 1964 in Minot , North Dakota ) is a professional American poker player . The "Fossilman" won in 2004 , the poker world championship . He is known for wearing opaque holographic sunglasses during games .

Early years

Raymer's parents moved to Lansing , Michigan when he was a few months old . At the age of 11 he then moved to Clearwater , Florida . After graduating from high school in St. Louis , he studied chemistry at the University of Missouri , where he was a member of the Kappa-Sigma Brotherhood. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1992 . Raymer then worked as a patent attorney for over ten years , but has since given up this profession.

Poker career

Raymer at the 2005 WSOP

After moving to Stonington , Connecticut in 1999, Raymer began playing poker at Foxwoods Resort Casino . During this time he represented a pharmaceutical company as a patent attorney.

Raymer made it into the prize ranks for the first time at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas in 2001 in the Omaha Hi-Lo Split 8 Or Better variant . In the 2004 WSOP defeated Raymer in the main event in the heads-up David Williams and won the five million dollars doped first prize and a bracelet . In the final Raymer defeated Williams A 4 with 8 8 . Raymer got the entry fee by winning a $ 160 tournament on the online poker platform PokerStars . He was then a representative of PokerStars .

In 2005, Raymer made it to 25th place out of 5619 participants in the main tournament, winning over $ 300,000 in prize money. This was seen by equally strong players as one of the most incredible achievements in poker, also in view of the rapidly growing number of players in the main tournament in these years. In Poker Superstars III , Raymer was eliminated in the preliminary round.

His total tournament winnings amount to over eight million US dollars .

In March 2006, Raymer finished second in the Sunday Million on PokerStars under the nickname Fossilman . He won $ 180,000 there, even though more than 1,500 people took part in the tournament. Another tournament success in online poker was the 2007 World Championship of Online Poker . He won a Pot Limit Omaha tournament and nearly $ 170,000 in prize money.

Character and personality

Raymer is called "Fossilman" because his hobby is collecting fossils . He uses a small fossil to hide the cards while he is playing poker. Early in his poker career, he increased his bankroll by selling fossils to other players at the table. Another characteristic of Raymer is that he puts on very bizarre hologram glasses in critical situations. Although he is considered one of the most feared players in No Limit Texas Hold'em worldwide, Raymer has also earned his reputation for being a very friendly person to talk to.

Besides the WSOP, Raymer only plays a few tournaments as he prefers to spend time with his wife Cheryl and daughter Sophie instead of taking part in the poker circuit and its necessary travel. In November 2005, Raymer and his family moved to Raleigh , North Carolina .

In 2005 Raymer appeared on the talk show Heads Up with Richard Herring , where he discussed his life, career and love for poker. He made a cameo as a poker player in the 2008 comedy film All In All Or Nothing . He planned to run for Vice President of the United States in the Libertarian Party in 2008 .
