Juan Carlos "El Matador" Mortensen (born April 13, 1972 in Ambato , Ecuador ) is a professional Spanish - American poker player .

Mortensen has earned more than twelve million US dollars with poker in live tournaments , making him the second most successful Spanish poker player after Adrián Mateos . Mortensen won in 2001 , the Main Event of the World Series of Poker and in 2003 one another bracelet in this tournament series. He is also a three-time champions of the World Poker Tour . Mortensen was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in October 2016 . As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , he was named one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .

Personal

Mortensen was born in Ecuador to a Dane and a Spaniard and lived there until 1987 when his family moved to Spain. He was married to Cecilia Reyes, also a professional poker player, from January 1990 to 2006.

Poker career

Career

Mortensen moved from Spain to the United States in the late 1990s to play poker professionally. In July 2001, he had his first major win by winning the World Series of Poker Main Event at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas . He received US $ 1.5 million in prize money and a bracelet . In the 2003 WSOP Mortensen sat at a tournament of the variant Limit Hold'em by and secured his second bracelet and around $ 250,000. In 2004 he won his first title at the Main Event of the World Poker Tour (WPT). Mortensen secured the North American Poker Championship and a prize of one million dollars. In 2007 he won the WPT season finale at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas and received the grand prize of nearly four million dollars. In March 2010 Mortensen won the Hollywood Poker Open in Lawrenceburg , Indiana , his third WPT title and nearly $ 400,000. In late February 2011, he sat at the final table of the WPT Main Event in Los Angeles and finished third for around $ 640,000. At the 2013 WSOP Main Event , Mortensen narrowly missed the final table in tenth place and received over $ 570,000 in prize money.
