Antonio Esfandiari (born December 8, 1978 in Tehran as Amir Esfandiari ) is a professional American - Iranian poker player .
Esfandiari has earned over $ 27.5 million in live poker tournaments . He won the Big One for One Drop of the World Series of Poker in 2012, securing the highest prize money paid out to date of more than 18 million US dollars. Overall, he is a three-time bracelet winner of the tournament series and two-time title holder of the World Poker Tour . As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , Esfandiari was named one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .
Personal
Esfandiari moved his family to San José , California, when he was nine . Since he was annoyed at school because of his first name Amir, he had it changed first to Anthony and, at 19, to Antonio. Esfandiari later worked as a professional trick artist, hence the nickname The Magician .
Poker career
Career
While he worked as a magician, he started playing poker and won in 2004 nearly 1.4 million US dollars by winning the Main Event of the LA Poker Classic as part of the World Poker Tour in Los Angeles . Shortly afterwards he won his first bracelet at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in the variant Pot Limit Texas Hold'em .
Esfandiari participated in the second and third seasons of Poker Superstars . After finishing last in season two, he managed to finish the tournament in second place a year later. He was also featured on five of the seven seasons of High Stakes Poker .
From May 2007 Esfandiari was on the American pay-per-view broadcaster MOJO HD in the eight-part television series I bet you with his best friend Phil Laak , in which the two made crazy bets against each other. Like Laak, he also made a cameo as a poker player in the 2008 comedy film All in - All or nothing .
In July 2012 to Esfandiari secured at the World Series of Poker victory in the Big One for One Drop . The $ 1 million buy-in tournament was the most expensive poker tournament in the world to date. Trivia
In January 2016, Esfandiari only lungeed for 48 hours due to a bet with multi-millionaire Bill Perkins during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas . However, since Esfandiari urinated into a bottle at his table during the main event in order to save himself the exhausting way to the toilet, he was disqualified by the tournament management and then donated the amount won against Perkins as an apology to charity.
