Scarborough

Scarborough is a suburb in the north of Perth , Western Australia on the Indian Ocean with over 15,000 inhabitants (25% of them foreigners - 2016), which belongs to the independent administrative district City of Stirling . It is named after a seaside resort of the same name on the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire in England .

Cityscape

Scarborough is intersected by two four-lane boulevards (West Coastal Highway in north-south direction and Scarborough Road in west-east direction). In between there are smaller streets with heterogeneous structures, some simple one and two-family houses, but some more representative stately villas.

Parallel to the beach, separated from it by a green strip, runs the esplanade lined with palm trees and araucarias with spacious parking areas, apartments, cafés and fast-food restaurants. Architecturally out of the ordinary is a dominant high-rise complex that houses a luxury hotel built in 1986 by the major Australian investor Alan Bond ; it claims to be the only one in Western Australia that is directly on the beach.

There are other eateries, shops, bars, pubs and nightclubs on Scarborough Beach Road and the surrounding streets. On Saturdays, junk is traded at the Scarborough Fair Markets .

Beach

The main attraction of Scarborough is Scarborough Beach .

Geographically, this belongs to the Sunset Coast in its southern, urban section, which extends with fine sandy beaches approx. 30 km north of the metropolitan area of Perth and its inhabitants together with Cottesloe Beach and City Beach to the south and Trigg Beach and Sorrento Beach to the north from Scarborough serves as a local recreation area, especially on the weekends.

Scarborough Beach is the Sunset Coast's favorite surfing beach . There is a surf school and a dedicated club. In the summer months, the guarded beach also serves as a sun and bathing beach when there is little wind and weak waves. In the winter months it is only recommended for experienced surfers because of its dangerous undercurrents in strong winds. Windsurfing and kite surfing are also popular sports.
