William O. "Bill" Perkins III (* 2. February 1969 in Houston , Texas ) is an American hedge fund - manager , film producer , film actor , author and poker player .

Personal

Perkins grew up in Jersey City , New Jersey, USA . There he graduated from the private St. Peter's Preparatory School in 1986. Perkins later studied electrical engineering at the University of Iowa in Iowa City . He lives in Houston .

Perkins is known for betting with other poker players. In October 2013 he lost a bet against Jeff Gross , who got a tattoo selected by Perkins for a payment of 550,000 US dollars . In January 2016, Antonio Esfandiari only lungeed for 48 hours because of a bet with Perkins during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas . However, since Esfandiari urinated into a bottle at his table during the main event in order to save himself the exhausting way to the toilet, he was disqualified by the tournament management and then donated the amount won against Perkins as an apology to charity. In March 2017, Perkins entered into a bet with brothers Matthew and Jaime Staples . In order to win the bet, they had to achieve a difference in body weight of less than one kilogram within a year . When the bet was made, Jaime Staples weighed around 140 kg, while his brother Matthew weighed only 60 kg. At the official weigh-in on March 27, 2018, both were exactly the same weight, turning a wager of just $ 3,000 into a profit of $ 150,000.

Entrepreneurial career

Perkins worked with natural gas trader John Douglas Arnold after graduating from university . In 1997, Perkins founded Small Ventures USA, LP , which specializes in venture capital and private equity . In 2002 he joined Centaurus Energy , which lasted until 2012. Since then, Perkins has focused on hedge funds , through which he has amassed an estimated fortune of $ 50 million to $ 400 million .

Poker career

Perkins plays on the online poker platform PokerStars under the nickname GASTRADER . He occasionally takes part in renowned live tournaments, but plays almost exclusively high roller events, i.e. tournaments with buy-ins of at least 10,000 US dollars .

Perkins made its first live cash placement in mid-January 2012 at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventures (PCA) high roller event in the Bahamas . There he finished 15th out of 148 players and received prize money of just under 60,000 US dollars. In July 2012 and 2014 he played the Big One for One Drop of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas , the most expensive poker tournament of the year. However, he failed to make it into the money on both occasions at the $ 1 million buy-in event. In late June 2013, Perkins reached the final table of the most expensive event of the 2013 WSOP , the US $ 111,111 High Roller for One Drop , finishing third behind Anthony Gregg and Chris Klodnicki , for which he received nearly US $ 2 million. At the beginning of October 2013, Perkins finished fourth in the Super High Roller of the European Poker Tour in London , securing the equivalent of around 470,000 US dollars. In January 2017 he reached the money ranks at two PCA events of the No Limit Hold'em variant and received prize money of almost 100,000 US dollars. Beginning August 2019 Perkins reached the Triton Million for Charity in London, with a buy-in of one million pounds world most expensive poker tournament, the final table and was awarded for his sixth place his highest ever prize of the equivalent of more than 2.6 million US Dollar.

Overall, Perkins has earned just under 5.5 million US dollars from poker in live tournaments. From April to December 2016 he played as part of the Berlin Bears in the Global Poker League and reached the final with his team.
