James "Jaime" Staples (born May 27, 1991 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a professional Canadian poker player .
Personal
Staples comes from Lethbridge and began studying there at the University of Lethbridge , which he broke off for an aspired golf career. In 2017 he moved to Europe with his girlfriend and lived successively in Split , Bucharest , Malta and Harrogate . Staples has been engaged since November 2018.
In March 2017, Staples and his brother Matthew entered a bet with multi-millionaire Bill Perkins . In order to win the bet, they had to achieve a difference in body weight of less than one kilogram within a year . When the bet was made, Jaime Staples weighed around 140 kg, while his brother Matthew weighed only 60 kg. As a result, the brothers hired Mike Vacanti as a fitness trainer and posted regular updates under the hashtag "UltimateSweat". At the official weigh-in on March 27, 2018, both were exactly the same weight, turning a wager of just $ 3,000 into a profit of $ 150,000.
Poker career
Staples started playing for play money on the online poker room PokerStars under the nickname jaimestaples . In June 2013 he was successful at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and got money at the Millionaire Maker . He has been playing poker professionally since October 2014 and started streaming his tournaments on the Twitch video portal . Staples now has over 130,000 followers there. In mid-February 2016, Staples made it to the money at the main event of the European Poker Tour and finished 43rd out of 605 players in Dublin for around 11,000 euros . He cashed once at the 2016 WSOP , finishing in 1936 at Colossus , the largest tournament in the series, for more than $ 1,000. In mid-January 2017, Staples also made the money in the first edition of the PokerStars Championship (PSC) and took 27th place in the main event in the Bahamas for a cash prize of 19,000 US dollars. In PSC Barcelona end of August 2017 Staples won a turbo tournament of the variant PLO and his first live tournament and a prize money of 20,000 euros.
Overall, Staples has made more than $ 100,000 in poker live tournaments and over $ 1 million online.
