Johnny Chan (* 1957 in Canton , People's Republic of China ) is a professional American poker player .
Chan won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker in 1987 and 1988 and is a ten-time bracelet winner in this tournament series. As part of the 50th edition of the World Series of Poker , he was named one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .
Personal
Chan came to Houston via Hong Kong and Phoenix in 1973 . At the age of 21, he dropped out of the University of Houston and started working in hotel and restaurant management. In the mid-1980s, Chan moved to Las Vegas to earn a living as a professional poker player.
Poker career
Career
Chan won in 1987 and 1988 , the Main Event of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas . In 1989 he only had to admit defeat to Phil Hellmuth . So far, Chan has won ten bracelets at the WSOP. This made Chan, together with Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth, the record holder until 2007. Hellmuth is now the sole record holder with 15 bracelets. Chan was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2002. Along with Johnny Moss , Doyle Brunson and Stu Ungar, Chan is one of the four players to have won the WSOP Main Event twice in a row. In March 2020, Chan was recognized for Lifetime Achievement at the Global Poker Awards .
Chan's total income from live poker tournaments are more than 8.5 million US dollars . In 1998 he made a cameo in the film Rounders with Matt Damon and Edward Norton .
