The Main Event of the 1978 World Series of Poker was the main event of the ninth staging of the Poker World Championship in Las Vegas .

Tournament structure

The main tournament of the World Series of Poker in No Limit Hold'em started on May 17 and ended with the final table on May 22, 1978. The tournament was held at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas . The total of 42 participants had to pay a buy-in of US $ 10,000 each, and for the first time there were five paid places. The previous winners Johnny Moss , Thomas Preston , Walter Pearson , Brian Roberts and Doyle Brunson were all eliminated on the first day of the tournament. With Barbara Freer first played a woman's main event, but did not make it into the prize money ranks.
