The Main Event of the World Series of Poker 2006 was the main tournament of the 37th edition of the Poker World Championship in Las Vegas .

The main event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in No Limit Hold'em started on July 28 and was on August 4, after only nine players were left, interrupted. The final table was played from August 10, 2006. The tournament was held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas . The total of 8773 participants had to pay a buy-in of 10,000 US dollars each, and there were 873 paid places for them. It was the biggest main event in WSOP history to date. Best woman was Sabyl Cohen-Landrum, who finished 56th for more than $ 120,000.

The final table started on August 10, 2006. In the final hand, Gold won with Q 9 against Wasicka with 10 10 . The twelve million dollars was the highest prize money that had ever been awarded at a sporting event. That record was only broken in 2012 by the Big One for One Drop .
