David "Chip" Reese (born March 28, 1951 in Centerville , Ohio , † December 4, 2007 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was a professional American poker player . He won three bracelets in the World Series of Poker . As part of the 50th edition of this tournament series, Reese was named as one of the 50 best players in poker history in June 2019 .
Personal
Reese studied at Dartmouth College economics . He then enrolled in Stanford Law School . After being in Las Vegas 40,000 US dollars had won, Reese, however, decided to become a poker player.
Poker career
Career
Reese won three bracelets at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas . In 1978 he won a $ 1,000 tournament of the Seven Card Stud variant and in 1982 a $ 5,000 event of the same variant. Doyle Brunson , in his book Super System, described him as one of the top two young poker players in the world and the best seven-card stud player he'd ever played. Reese was allowed to write the chapter Seven Card Stud in Brunson's bestseller Super / System . Reese achieved his greatest tournament success at the 2006 WSOP by winning the $ 50,000 HORSE tournament. He received a prize money of just under 1.8 million US dollars as well as his third bracelet. In heads-up he sat at the table with Andy Bloch for over seven hours. 286 hands were dealt before Reese emerged victorious. Above all, however, Reese played cash game and was considered one of the best players ever. In 1991 he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame as the youngest player to date . In total, Reese won around $ 4 million in official live poker tournaments.
Reese died on December 4, 2007 at the age of 56 from complications of a dragged on pneumonia. In his honor, the new trophy that was given to the winner of the $ 50,000 HORSE event at the WSOP was named the "Chip Reese Memorial Trophy". It shows his winning hand from 2006. The first player to receive it was Scotty Nguyen after winning the 49th event of the 2008 WSOP .
