Gregory "Greg" Merson (born December 8, 1987 in Washington, DC ) is a professional American poker player . He won the World Poker Championship in 2012 .

Poker career

Career

Merson played online under the nickname gregy20723 from January 2007 to October 2015 . Since 2007 he has also participated in renowned live tournaments .

In July 2009 he was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and finished 639th in the main event for more than $ 20,000 in prize money. At the WSOP 2012 , Merson first won a tournament of the Six Handed No Limit Hold'em variant in early July , which brought him more than one million dollars in prize money and a bracelet, and then took part again in the main event . There he reached the final table, which was played in October 2012, with the third most chips. After around 400 hands, Merson won it on October 30, 2012 after heads-up against Jesse Sylvia , securing prize money of over eight million dollars . As a result of this success, he also won the WSOP Player of the Year Award ahead of Phil Hellmuth, and at the end of the year he was named Player of the Year by Card Player Magazine . In mid-January 2014, Merson took second place in a high-roller tournament as part of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventures on Paradise Island for almost a million dollars in prize money.

Overall, Merson has earned almost $ 11.5 million playing poker in live tournaments .
