Hal Evan Sutton (born April 28, 1958 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR . He is a major winner and was the non-playing captain of the Ryder Cup team in the USA in 2004 .
Career
Sutton came from a wealthy family who owned an oil company. After winning the US Amateur Championship in 1980, he became a professional golfer the following year .
Two years later, Sutton took his first and only major , the 1983 PGA Championship , one step ahead of Jack Nicklaus . From 1982 to 1986 the young star recorded seven tournament victories, including the highest-endowed Players Championship . Then followed a winless period until 1995, before Sutton made it into the top 10 of the golf world rankings again, especially from 1998 , and collected further titles. To date, he has a total of fourteen tournament wins on the PGA TOUR on his credit side. Noteworthy was his victory at the Players Championship in 2000, when he defeated Tiger Woods with a sensational final spurt.
Sutton was four times in the Ryder Cup Team USA before 2004 to captain ( non-playing captain was appointed). This comparison match in the local Oakland Hills Country Club ended with a debacle for the Americans and Sutton had to fend off severe criticism from his compatriots. In the Presidents Cup he was twice active as a player.
Since April 2008 he has been eligible to play for the Champions Tour .
Hal Sutton is married to his wife Ashley. The two have three daughters, including a pair of twins, and live in Sutton's home town of Shreveport .
