Rory McIlroy , MBE (born May 4, 1989 in Holywood , Northern Ireland ) is a Northern Irish professional golfer . He is a four-time major champion . He is also to Luke Donald , the second golfer to both the money list the PGA Tour and the European Tour to win what in 2012 in both tournament series entitled him Player of the Year earned
Career
At the age of 15, McIlroy was a member of the victorious European team at the 2004 Junior Ryder Cup . A year later, he became the youngest ever winner of both the West of Ireland Championship and the Irish Close Championship . He was able to defend both titles the following year and also win the European Amateur Championship . In the same year McIlroy represented Ireland in the Eisenhower Trophy and victorious in the Amateur World Team Championship . In February 2007 he was at the top of the world rankings for amateurs for a week. At the 2007 Open Championship in Carnoustie, he won the Silver Medal as best amateur . That year, McIlroy was on the team from Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup , which was just inferior to the USA.
Just a few days after his 16th birthday, McIlroy had his first appearance at a European Tour tournament , the British Masters 2005. At the age of 17, he achieved his first place in the prize money at the Dubai Desert Classic 2007, which he did not accept as an amateur could.
In September 2007 he became a professional golfer and earned enough prize money through invitations to tournaments on the European Tour to secure full eligibility to play for the following season. At the end of that season he finished 95th in the European Tour Order of Merit , a year later McIlroy was already 36th.
In February 2009 he finally managed to win his first tournament at the heavily occupied Dubai Desert Classic . With that he also reached the top 20 of the golf world rankings . After a third place in the PGA Championship and a second place in the Dubai World Championship , McIlroy finished second in the Race to Dubai at the end of the season and made it into the top 10 of the world rankings.
Since 2010, McIlroy has also played on the PGA Tour in the USA . His first win was at the Quail Hollow Championship in early May .
After he lost a lead of four strokes after the third day at The Masters in April 2011 and finished in shared 15th place, he achieved his first victory in a major championship in June . He won the US Open with the best result ever played at this tournament of 16 strokes under par, with which he undercut the old record (−12) set by Tiger Woods in 2000. After this tournament he was ranked fourth in the world . In November 2011, McIlroy moved up to second place.
In January 2012, McIlroy received the Laureus Sport Award in the World Breakthrough of the Year category.
By winning the Honda Classic in March 2012, McIlroy was able to take first place in the world rankings for the first time. At 22, he is the second youngest in the world to date. In August he was able to secure his second major victory at the PGA Championship with a record lead of eight strokes (previously Jack Nicklaus with seven). He temporarily took the lead in the world rankings again.
In July 2014 he won the Open Championship and thus his third major. After winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August, he moved back to number one in the world rankings and followed in the same month with his fourth major title by winning the PGA Championship. The Northern Irish also won the Race to Dubai of the European Tour at the end of the 2014 season .
In 2015 McIlroy won his second tournament participation, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour. With a score of 22 under par, he set the tournament record. At the Honda Classic , his first start on the PGA Tour that year, he missed for the first time since the 2013 Open Championship. H. after 22 consecutive participations, the cut on the PGA Tour. At the US Masters he showed his best performance so far in this tournament with fourth place. On May 3, he prevailed in the final of the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship with 4 & 2 against the American Gary Woodland . It was his second success so far at a tournament of the World Golf Championship. At the end of September 2016, Rory won the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup .
On March 17, 2019 he won the Players Championship for the first time , it was his 15th tournament victory on the PGA Tour. In June 2019 McIlroy won the Canadian Open and is therefore part of the Triple Crown, he was able to win the three oldest tournaments of the PGA Tour in his career, the Open Championship, the US Open and the Canadian Open. At the end of that season he won the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup for the second time.
Private
McIlroy was in a relationship with the Danish tennis player and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki for almost 3 years and engaged since December 31, 2013. On May 21, 2014, it was announced that the golfer broke off the engagement and the couple separated.
Since December 2015, McIlroy was engaged to Erica Stoll, a PGA America employee. The two married in April 2017.
