Holywood ( Irish : Ard Mhic Nasca; German: "The Height of MacNasca") is a city in northeast Ireland in the historic County Down in Northern Ireland .

Holywood is located in Northern Ireland's County Down on the south bank of Belfast Lough , which is the mouth of the River Lagan . The closest cities are Belfast (10 kilometers southwest) and Bangor (twelve kilometers east). Administratively it belongs to the District Ards and North Down . The George Best Belfast City Airport is a few kilometers away.

The English name of the place, originally Latin Sanctus Boscus ("holy forest"), goes back to the Normans , who referred to the woodland surrounding a monastery founded before 640. The anglicized form first appeared in the 14th century as a hali code . The pronunciation of today's name is identical to that of Hollywood .

The population of Holywoods was determined in the 2001 Census with 12,037 people; of which 23.0% were Catholic and 68.6% Protestant. Around 1900 the place had about 3500 inhabitants. The headquarters of the Security Service ("MI5") in Northern Ireland is located in the Palace Barracks in Holywood .
