Life

Beginning of his career

Enni's career began in 1989 with the series Troubled Souls , drawn by McCrea and appearing in the short-lived anthology series Crisis . It is about a young, Protestant man who gets caught in the turmoil and violence of the Northern Ireland conflict. The series drew a sequel, For a Few Troubles More , in which the two supporting characters Dougie and Ivor from Troubled Souls determine the plot. The couple got their own series Dicks at Caliber in 1997 .

Another series for Crisis was True Faith , a satire on religion inspired by Enni's school days, performed by Warren Pleece . As with the two Troubles stories, a collective edition was published in 1990. Protests by religious associations, however, caused sales to be stopped soon. In 1997 Vertigo published a new edition.

2000 AD

A short time later, Ennis wrote for the magazine 2000 AD , for which he took over the showcase title Judge Dredd and continued for a few years.

DC Comics

As his first work on a US comic, he took over the DC Comics horror title Hellblazer in 1991 . He wrote this until 1994. During the second half of the Ennis Run, Steve Dillon became the new regular draftsman. They later created the Preacher series together .

From 1993 to 1995, Ennis and John McCrea worked on another DC series, The Demon , in which they introduced superpowered hit man Tommy Monaghan, also known as Hitman .

After the end of The Demon received Hitman own series, which in turn was implemented by both. From 1996 to 2001 the series had 60 issues plus a few specials.

Ennis main work, however, is probably the series Preacher , created together with the draftsman Steve Dillon. This series has 66 issues on the DC label Vertigo and tells the story of a disaffected preacher with supernatural powers who is in search of God , who has abandoned his creation.

These attempts were quite successful commercially, but Ennis soon gave up The Darkness . Years later, he and Amanda Connor created the image comics series The Pro (German: The Super Slut ).

Marvel

Ennis later moved to the main competitor Marvel Comics and again took over the Punisher series with Steve Dillon . Ennis' wicked humor was criticized by many fans of the series, but because of the great success, other miniseries with the character appeared.

Also at Marvel, he worked on Hulk : Smash and a Spider-Man mini-series with John McCrea, and a series about Nick Fury with Darick Robertson.

style

The work of Garth Ennis is characterized by his biting black humor and the use of excessive force as a stylistic device. Jokes at the expense of minorities , blasphemy and wild, sometimes confused stories are also common with him. But topics such as male friendships and unusual closings of stories can also be found in his stories.
