Heinz Kautzleben (born March 31, 1934 in Kelbra ) is a German geophysicist and academy professor who works mainly in geomagnetics and cosmos research .

education

Heinz Kautzleben was born and raised in Kelbra am Kyffhäuser . His father was a master baker there, was drafted into the military in 1940 and disappeared during the war. From 1940 to 1952 Kautzleben attended elementary school in Kelbra and secondary school in Sangerhausen , where he obtained his Abitur . The teachers had promoted his mathematical and scientific talents.

Kautzleben studied geophysics from 1952 at the University of Leipzig (renamed Karl Marx University Leipzig (KMU) in 1953 ), where he heard lectures from well-known professors such as Robert Lauterbach , director of the Institute for Geophysical Exploration, and Banseler , who was responsible for the scientific development of Sponsored Kautzleben after graduating. He completed his studies at the beginning of 1957 with a degree in physics with the rating “very good”. The thesis dealt with the hydrodynamic theory of plasma and hydromagnetic waves in near-earth space.

As a geophysicist at the academy in Potsdam

After graduating in 1957, Kautzleben worked at the Geomagnetic Institute Potsdam of the German Academy of Sciences (DAW), initially as a research assistant and research assistant until 1965, then as a department head until 1967. He received his doctorate in 1962 at KMU Leipzig , Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, with the dissertation for Dr. rer. nat. (Doctoral supervisor : Banseler ).

Kautzleben completed his habilitation in 1966 at the University of Leipzig with the habilitation thesis for Dr. rer. nat. habil. From 1964 to 1969 he taught part-time at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB).

In 1968 he became the acting director of the Geodetic Institute Potsdam of the DAW. In 1969, Kautzleben was appointed Professor of Geophysics at the DAW by Academy President Hermann Klare . From 1969 to 1973 he held a part-time teaching position at the University of Leipzig.

From 1969 on he was first deputy director, then from 1973 director of the Central Institute for Physics of the Earth (ZIPE) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) in Potsdam , which he headed until 1988.

Kautzleben attached great importance to international scientific cooperation : initially in the International Association for Geomagnetism and Aeronomy , from 1971 in the International Association of Geodesy , where he became a member of the Executive Committee in 1975 and Vice-President in 1987 . From 1974 Kautzleben worked in the academies of the socialist countries for planetary geophysics. He was also a member of the Interkosmos coordination committee (KoKo-Interkosmos) chaired by the Secretary General of the AdW Claus Grote , whose deputy he became in 1988, while at the same time chairing the scientific advisory board of KoKo-Interkosmos. In the Interkosmos program, space travelers from other nations were given the opportunity to participate in Soviet space flights: this included the space flight of Sigmund Jähn in 1978 .

In this central institute ZIPE under the direction of Kautzleben, some of the scientific experiments that Sigmund Jähn carried out during his space flight in summer 1978 were prepared . Jähn was also involved in the evaluation of the scientific results by the ZIPE as part of his doctorate , which took place in 1983 at this central institute.

In 1978 Kautzleben was awarded the National Prize for Science and Technology . In 1979 he was elected a corresponding member and in 1987 a full member of the learned society of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. Since 1986 he has been an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1993 he became a founding member of the learned society Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin .

In cosmos research at the academy in Berlin

In addition to his function as director of ZIPE, Kautzleben headed the research area for geosciences and cosmos studies at the GDR Academy of Sciences from 1984 to 1990 .

In 1989, Kautzleben was appointed director of the Institute for Cosmos Research at the AdW in Berlin as the successor to Robert Knuth , and he headed this institute until the GDR Academy of Sciences was dissolved at the end of 1991 during the German reunification process .

Political activity

After German reunification

At the end of 1991 Kautzleben was given early retirement. He continued his scientific and journalistic activities within the framework of the learned society Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin . Since 2001 he has been the spokesman for the working group "Geo-, Mining, Environmental, Space and Astro Sciences". This working group regularly prepares publications and in particular conducts scientific colloquia, for example on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Sigmund Jähn's space flight , which took place from August 26th to September 3rd, 1978.

The main research areas and scientific interests of Kautzleben are:

  • Geophysics, especially mathematical geophysics
  • earth sciences
  • Remote sensing of the earth by aerocosmic means
  • Space science
  • History of Earth Sciences
  • History of the Berlin Academy of Sciences and especially its learned society as a prehistory to the Leibniz Society .
