Hermann Klare
Hermann Klare (born May 12, 1909 in Hameln , † August 22, 2003 in Dresden ) was a German chemist . From 1961 to 1969 he was director of the Academy Institute for Fiber Research in Teltow and from 1954 to 1961 as professor at the Technical University of Chemistry in Leuna-Merseburg and from 1962 to 1964 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1968 to 1979 he was President of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin, which was renamed the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in 1972 .
Life

Hermann Klare was born in Hameln in 1909 and studied chemistry , which he began in 1928 at the University of Heidelberg and continued from 1929 at the University of Kiel , where he also did his doctorate under Otto Diels and Kurt Alder . Between 1933 and 1945 he worked as an industrial chemist in various companies in the field of the production of rayon , especially Perlon fibers . Klare was a member of the SA and joined the NSDAP in 1937 . After the end of the Second World War , he was operations manager in chemical factories in Premnitz and Schwarza in 1945/1946 . From 1947 to 1949 he worked in the city of Klin in the Soviet Union in the construction of an artificial silk production facility that had been brought to the USSR from Landsberg on the Warta as a reparation payment .
After his return, he became operations manager in 1949 and director of the state-owned company VEB synthetic fiber works in Schwarza in 1951 . In 1953 he moved to the Teltow- Seehof-based Institute for Fiber Research (Director: Erich Correns ) of the German Academy of Sciences (DAW) in Berlin, later the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW), where he was department head until 1961 and then worked as institute director until 1969. In 1955 he was appointed professor by the academy, from 1954 to 1961 he was professor at the Technical University of Chemistry in Leuna-Merseburg and from 1962 to 1964 at the Humboldt University in Berlin .
From 1961 Hermann Klare was chairman of the research association of the natural science, technical and medical institutes of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. From 1963 to 1968 he acted as Vice President, from 1968 to 1979 as President of the Academy with Ulrich Hofmann as Deputy and Vice President, later as 1st Vice President (1970 to 1990). Werner Scheler then held the office of President from 1979 to 1990 , during which time Klare was again Vice President of the Academy from 1979 to 1984. In addition, he served as chairman of their chemistry class from 1980 to 1988 . Under the direction of Klare there was a fundamental reform of the academy from 1968 to 1972 with a structural reorganization, the consolidation of its academy institutes into large central institutes , an orientation of its research activities on the economic developments in the GDR and in 1972 the renaming of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .
Hermann Klare died in Dresden in 2003 and was buried in Kleinmachnow , where he lived for many years .
Awards
Hermann Klare became a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin in 1961 and seven years later also a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . From 1971 he was also a foreign member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and from 1996 of the Russian Academy of Sciences . In addition, he was a member of the Academies of Science in Poland , Czechoslovakia , Bulgaria and Mongolia . He received the National Prize of the GDR in 1951 and 1963 , the Patriotic Order of Merit in 1973 , the Karl Marx Order in 1974 and an honorary doctorate from the Technical University "Carl Schorlemmer" in Leuna-Merseburg , the 1979 Gold Medal for the Patriotic Order of Merit and the Lomonosov Gold Medal in 1976 . The University of Sofia and the Technical University of Dresden also awarded him an honorary doctorate.
