The Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ” ( Bulgarian : Софийски университет“ Св. Климент Охридски ” ) is the largest university in the Bulgarian capital Sofia with around 25,000 students . It is named after the scholar and saint Kliment von Ohrid .

The university was founded on October 1, 1888 and is the oldest university in the country. At first there was only one Faculty of History and Philology. A year later the mathematics and natural sciences and a law faculty were added. The university is a member of the network of Balkan universities .

The university is divided into 15 faculties:

On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 1988, the university gave its name to the Sofia Mountains , a mountain range on Alexander I Island in Antarctica. In 2016, Anastas Gerdjikov was the rector of Sofia University.
