City structure

Belong to the city of Premnitz

  • the districts Mögelin and Döberitz
  • the residential areas expansion Döberitz, expansion Mögelin, Gapel , Grünaue, Königshütte, settlement Döberitz and forest colony. The Lietzenhütte desert lies in the Döberitz district .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1375 as "Prebenitz". With the onset of industrialization at the end of the 19th century, the village-like appearance of the place changed.

Premnitz belonged to the district of Westhavelland until 1952 (until 1947 in the Prussian province of Brandenburg , 1947–1952 in the state of Brandenburg of the SBZ or GDR ). From 1952 to 1993 the city was in the Rathenow district (until 1990 in the GDR district of Potsdam , 1990-1993 again in the state of Brandenburg). Premnitz has been part of the Havelland district since 1993 .

Protest against job cuts in front of the fiber AG plant in Premnitz on December 10, 1990

Of considerable importance for the economic development of Premnitz 'was the chemical industry, which had been located here since 1915 and which later became the property of IG Farben . During the Second World War , 1,200 forced laborers and prisoners of war , who were housed in seven large and several small camps, had to do forced labor: in armaments and coal production, in the “Havellager” of the DAF and at IG Farben. Their factory was converted into a state-owned company in 1949 and renamed VEB Chemiefaserwerk "Friedrich Engels" in 1960 .

In the course of the expansion of the man-made fiber industry in the 1950s and 1960s and the associated increase in the number of residents, new residential areas with appropriate utility facilities were created. In 1962 Premnitz was granted city rights.

In 1990 the man-made fiber plant was privatized and transformed into "Märkische Faser AG" under considerable restructuring. Due to the loss of jobs, unemployment rose sharply, which led to an emigration of many residents. Premnitz is the highest funding area in the EU .

In the 1990s, the city center was redesigned with the market square.

View from the Havelwiesen to the district of Döberitz

On July 13, 1992, the Minister of the Interior of Brandenburg gave his approval for the establishment of the Premnitz office. July 21, 1992 was set as the date of establishment of the office. The approval was initially limited to July 21, 1994. The office was based in the city of Premnitz and initially consisted of three communities in what was then the Rathenow district :

  1. City of Premnitz
  2. Doberitz
  3. Mögelin

The time limit was lifted on July 11, 1994. On December 31, 2002 Mögelin was incorporated into the city of Premnitz.

On October 26, 2003, the municipality of Döberitz was incorporated into the city of Premnitz by law. The Premnitz office was dissolved, the city of Premnitz became vacant.

Population development

After 1915 the population of Premnitz increased sharply. This increase intensified during the time of National Socialism through the expansion of war production. After the Second World War, the growth initially continued when the GDR expanded Premnitz into a chemical site. After the reunification, the population shrank significantly. In its population forecast for 2011–2030, the Brandenburg State Office for Building and Transport anticipates a further decline in the population.
